Hard Freeze kills watermelons - Sunfowers survive!

Last night was a real hard freeze. Not sure what the official temp was, but when I went to water the birds this morning, the water in the hose was frozen solid!

The watermelon vines were totally wiped out. Too bad too, these were my "longstanding" vines, planted last spring!

The beets appear to have handled the freeze just fine, along with the volunteer sunflower!

Yeah, Christmas sunflowers, only in Arizona!

Bring the Heat!

AZ Victory Gardener is not afraid of the heat...

Hottest day of the year so far, but as you can see, our sunflowers are doing OK.

The "intensively planted" cucumbers are what is growing in front of the sunflowers. The intensive planting keeps the ground shaded using the broad leaves of the cucumbers.

I also planted them on the shady side of the sunflowers on purpose, to take them out of the heat in the late afternoon. Seems to be working well. The cucs were not even a little heat stressed today.

Sunflowers and Rainbows

Nice little double rainbow popped out yesterday at sunset, against the backdrop of a dark sky. The Creator's glorious handiwork nicely displayed!

The mammoth sunflower packet said 7-12 feet, and by gum, it delivered! Check these babies out, with my own sweet Mother Earth, a six foot lady, in the foreground for perspective.
